Sunday Morning In Paris

Nice tail wind.  It got is to Paris 30 minutes earlier than expected.  Our helpful driver was waiting for us when we finally got our luggage.  It took little time to get ourselves situated in our flat in the Latin quarter.

When we travel east like this we like to stay awake as long as we can.  Then nap.  Then get up and stay awake as long as we can into the night.

We did some significant walking already, checking out Notre Dame.

Notice all the locks on the fence of the bridge crossing the Seine and leading to Notre Dame.  We think that people commemorate their visit to the Cathedral by locking a lock to the fence and writing their names.  Many were couples.

Jan found out those are called "love locks."  Couples write their names on the locks and secure them to the fence.  Then they throw the key into the river.  Their love lasts forever, or so they believe.  While there are probably several thousand on this bridge it is not the only place in the world where the practice takes place.  Start spreading the news.....  (that's a hint).  Some regard the locks as graffiti.  Some regard it as a quaint practice.  French officials once tried to remove the locks but as you can probably predict they came back with even greater enthusiasm.

We also visited Sainte Chapelle which shows magnificent stained glass windows.

We are going to take a boat ride up and down the Seine tonight.  Should be pretty.

  1. Looks like you're off to a great start!! Excellent weather. The Sainte Chapelle windows are beautiful. You should really enjoy the river cruise. The Eiffel Tower looks spectacular when it's lit up at night.
